‘ABD ALLAH QUDUS b. al-HASAN b. ‘UTHMAN b. ALFA HAMMA al-Fullani, b. c. 1878, known as Baba Gomda

Alfa Hamma b. Yunus was a Masina Fulani who established himself in Yendi probably in the late eighteenth century. His son, ‘Uthman, opened a school at Kpabia, between Yendi and the growing market town of Salaga. Al-Hasan b. Uthman settled in Salaga, where Abd Allah was born.

He was taught first by his father, then moved to Kete Krakye at the time of the Salaga civil war, 1892, and studied under al-Hajj Umar b. Abi Bakr b. Uthman.

In 1323/1905-6, he moved to Yendi, where his father (d. 1342/1923) had become Friday Imam. After a time Abd Allah took up residence in Asamankese, and made the first of his ten
pilgrimages in 1927. He later returned to Yendi, and became Friday Imam there in 1937. He ventured writing Kotokoli and Dagbane, as well as Hausa, in Arabic script.

“The Tijaniyya Order in Tamale, Ghana: Its Foundation, Organization and Role [Master of Arts (MA) Thesis, Institute of Islamic Studies McGill University, Montreal
August, 2002]”

Interaction with the ulama shows that the Qadiriyya was the order that produced the earliest known awliya (saints) of the region. Notable walis of this area, like Shaykh Tahiru Kumbungu, al-Hajj 'Umar Karachi and al-Hajj Baba Gomda, were all adherents of the Qadiriyya, although later on they joined the fold of the Tijaniyya brotherhood.

The grandparents of al-Hajj Abdulai-Baba Gomda settled in Yendi, in the nineteenth century, where his parents and he himself were born and bred. His father, a local authority in the Islamic faith, gave him out to 'Umar of Karachi for studies. 'Umar was a man of wisdom and had a good number of students.

Baba Gomda studied with 'Umar, Qur'an commentary, Hadith and Fiqh. In later life he acquired much wealth, which he used to build many mosques and also help in the completion of others, especially in Yendi and Tamale. On becoming a muqaddam he introduced many people to the brotherhood.

He also travelled extensively just to propagate the religion and the Tijaniyya brotherhood, of which he was an authentic member until his death. He in fact led several delegations to Tamale. His activity may be dated mainly to the 1940s, on the basis of a statement by al-Hajj Dauda Mustafa Adabiyyah who went from Salaga to settle in Tamale in 1946.
