At an international
gathering of the Organization of Islamic Conference in Jiddah, in the Royal Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, all the
representives and delegations of the countries in attendance spoke (in Arabic).
And Sheikh Mahmoud Barhama Diop who was the representative from Senegal and
leader of her delegation was quite (throughout the event) and he never spoke.
So when it was his turn to speak, the Saudi representative (host country) who
was the chairman of the occasion, said, " I will n give the Senegalese
representative the chance to speak but, I think we need to translate what had
transpired for him (so far), because he may not understand Arabic language and
he did not hear what happened in our discussion".

However, when Sheikh
Barhama Diop gave a slutation, he thanked Allah and praised him(in Arabic) and
said amidst laughter : So did spend my youthful exuberance without seeking
knowledge?! ("hir" here he used it figuratively) I learnt (at an
early age) since I was born and have been practicing it daily (Arabic) after
breakfast and dinner, and then Allah blessed me with that Sheikh Shinqiti -
Ahmad Mahmoud Walad Rabbani - who used to hold my tongue so I can pronounce the
letter "haa".. Then Barhama Diop continued and brought up some much
awesome and amazing wonders. The gathering was so amazed with the unique
eloquence of this man, then the chairman of this occasion (the Saudi citizen
who in his introduction to him doubted if he understands Arabic) gave up the
chairmanship and requested him to be the chairman and sworn that no body chairs
the occasion but him.

Nuru Deen Al- Gabid spoke
about him saying: As part of his unique characteristics - perhaps this is the
basic speciality (about him) - That he used be the travelling companion
(personal protocol/secretary/aide) of Sheikh Ibrahim. He undertook most of his
travels worldwide with him, even in China where Sheikh compelled him to deliver
a speech on his behalf, he stood up and spoke and said all that Sheikh wanted
him to say.

I (the author of this
story) heard from his own mouth that: He once made Umrah with Sheikh Ibrahim
and when they entered (Raudah of Rasululah s.a.w) the demarcated
zone/"holy garden" of the Prophet s.a.w.(as he said in a hadith: The
space in between my minbar/pulpit and my grave is a garden as part of the
gardens of Paradise, hence Sheikh Ibrahim would always go to Raudah when he
goes to Madinah)
- Sheikh Ibrahim requested
him to recite his qasidah/poem which he wrote that rythmes with letter
"haa" at the end of every stanza, which begins with:
I am happy with my journey
to Al-Hadi (the guiding Prophet)
(In) my opinion meeting the
best of mankind is the best source of happiness

So when he recited to him
with a dimmed or subdued voice that non was hearing apart from him, Sheikh
rather commanded him to recite with a lauder and higher voice. When they went
out of the Raudah, Sheikh asked him to go back there and place or put the sheet
of paper which the qasidah/poem was written on at exactly where the head of the
Prophet s.a.w is located at his grave (within the confines of the Raudah).

Once again, he and Sheikh
together traveled to the Royal Kingdom of Qatar that. At that night he recited
to Sheikh his long qasidah/poem that rythmes with the letter " 'ain"
at the tail end of its stanzas, which comprises of the exceptional and
extraordinary characteristics of the Prophet (PBUH), which begins with:
Is it a glimmer or glitter
of light that manifests towards the ranches that shines?
So endow me with a man
(whose eyes) will shed tears when the glimmer of light shines

So the next morning, he
informed Sheikh that he saw the messenger of Allah (PBUH) in his dream and
Sheikh said to him: " Didn't I tell
you that (praising the Prophet s.a.w.) is a blessing to all of you?!".
These are few examples of exclusive status of our late Sheikh, that time will
not permit us to better deal at length with it.

He was an outstanding
intellectual, talented and terrific speaker that pulls whoever he meets (or
whoever listens to him) and he would attract, captivate, mesmeriz and hypnotize
him. In Marocco where he used to deliver Quranic Exegesis, dubbed, "Duroosul
Hassaniyah", "Hassaniyah Lessons"(named after their late King
Hassan), once King Hassan the 2nd (who could see seating opposite to him in the
video below at one of his lessons) stood up in respect and recognition for his
amazing talent and described him as: "This is a library walking on its
foot!".

And in yet another
instance, while he was delivering a khutbah/sermon in Cairo, the then Egpytinan
President Husny Mubarak stood up in a confused state, asking, "Who is this
Preacher"?, just wondering about the elequence of his tongue, and
articulacy and fluency of his speech. So may Allah have abundant mercy upon him
and him among the dwellers of Jannah in the Lot-trees without thorns, Talha
(plantain or banana tree) with flowers(or fruits), in a shade long-extended, by water flowing constantly and fruit in
abundance, whose season is not limited not(supply) forbidden(as Allah himself
discribed in Suratulul Waqi'ah) Ameen!!!!!
And why would he not be as
such, as information reached me (Husseini Yushau BabalWaiz) that once upon a
time, our Sheikh Barhama Diop went to his mentor Maulana Sheikh Barhama Niass
and asked him for some sheet of papers to write on them. Sheikh then looked at
him and immediately begin to compose this amazing poem orally:
Over to you the sheet of
papers O Barhama (Diop)
You have distanced
(yourself) away from the path of those who have gone astray
You have lived as a leader
and commander
As a young man who will
understand every problem (in knowledge/deen)
Pens will humble themselves
to you (meaning, they will write whatever your mind will command them to)
Until you will begin to be
called Barhama (Sheikh Barhama himself)
And this poem of
prospective hope regarding Sheikh Barhama Diop is the result of the divine
flood of knowledge and glittering glade tidings that he was endowed with by
Allah Almighty, as we have read above and as we will see in his video tape when
he was a muffasir/exegist for the book of Allah in Arabic Language in the Royal
Palace of the King of Marocco in Ramadan.
It is not strange that it
was said: A trainee turns to be like (his) trainer...His mentor, Sheikh Ibrahim
was the first ever black African to deliver khutbah/sermon and lead Jum'ah
prayer at masjid located at the great Al-Azhar University, which was
unprecedented in the annals of African history...!!!
One day Sheikh introduced
Sheikh Barhama Diop to the people around him and said: "This is my
student, I thought and trained him but he is more eloquent than me. Then Sheikh
Barhama Diop answered him saying: Maybe his teacher is more eloquent that your
teacher(a diguise way of telling Sheikh that he is more eloquent than him,
because he is the teacher here).
So this answer full of
humility, if anything at all indicates the extent of his respect to Sheikh and
at same time a lesson for us today's students, especially in this our oriented
path, that as students, no matter the level of knowledge we attain, it is
incumbent upon us to respect our teachers...!!!
We continuously ask Allah
Almighty to take our souls while on the path of these prominent, nobles and
pious scholars who have divorced themselves from the materialism of this world
due to their fear of getting tempted by it.
Folks, follow me on Friday
for the continuation of a great thesis on the life and legacy of Sheikh which
will dilate on prominent scholars among his students....!!!
