THE STORY OF SHAYKH
ISA AL-BARNAWI (ABECHE, CHAD)
{A miracle from the Fayda
Tijaniyya}

He went to Libya from
Abeche (Chad) on foot following a vision, after having been ostracized by the
(Tijani) ulama of Abeche because of his support of the Fayda (Divine Flood) of
Shaykh Ibrahim Niasse.
Today most of the ulama of
Abeche are Fayda or Fayda-friendly, and the Libyan students of Shaykh Esa have
sponsored a new zawiya there.
Abeche was a tijani stronghold
but the ulama were to a certain extent very conservative. They accused those
who followed shaykh Ibrahim of being Wahhabis.
Shaykh Ibrahim never
visited Chad as he was prevented by the then Christian president under the
instigation of the Muslim Ulama.
Some people accepted the
Fayda in Ndjamena after contacts with Nigeria in the 60s but were arrested
already at that time.
In Abeche, which is near
Sudan, Shaykh Isa al-Barnawi is reportedly the first to have believed in Shaykh
Ibrahim after seeing a picture and recognizing him from a previous dream.
He did not have the money
to travel to Kaolack but sent Shaikh Ibrahim Niasse a letter through a visitor
from Senegal.
Sheikh Ibrahim read the
letter, which contained a poem in his praise, to his friends and reportedly
said "this man has never met me but knows me better than any of you".
He intended to visit him following the subsequent Hajj, but was prevented by
the Chadian government.
He later took the Tijani
tariqa from Shaykh Qasim Tayyib, a Sudanese.
After the death of Shaykh
Ibrahim, shaykh Isa had a vision that told him to travel north. He left his
family and traveled without a single cent and any cloth apart from those he was
wearing, until he reached Libya on foot.
Before his death, he would
open 25 Zawiyas in Libya and train thousands of Libyans!
One of his closest
disciples was the Muqaddam Sidi Abd al Manam, whom we are fortunate to have
among us in Stellenbosch!

of Libya.
Originally from Chad.
Settled in Libya.
He spread the Tariqah
throughout Libya, and was a Muqaddam of Sahib al-Faydah (RA).
He is the one who wrote:

ما برهام إلا التجاني نفسه
شئت
أم كنت أهل نكرة
الامام
